This novel is based on the author's personal experience as a teacher in Brussels. It is a moving tale of repressed feelings and subjection to cruel circumstance and position, borne with heroic fortitude.
A book worth reading but spoiled by transparent and unsupportable unconcealed diatribe against the Catholic Church. Charlotte also makes something of a dog's breakfast in her poor caricature of the French nation. She would have well left caricature to Dickens and theology to those qualified to holistically pronounce.
